In March 2020, Gutsy Goodness passed the 5 year mark! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) approximately 45% of businesses fail during the first five years.
Through the Covid season we have continued the mantra that we began using during the first year of forming our business: "Get up every morning and do what God puts in front of you."
I wish we could say we had a detailed business plan from the beginning, but it was more of saturating every waking moment doing whatever it took to move from one step to another.
I read dozens of books, I studied successful businesses, and I took the last 20 years of experience I had running my own nonprofit and applied it to a new audience, hoping for the best.
These pieces of jewelry? I designed them because they are close to the reasons and process of why and how we began Gutsy Goodness
I love how entrepreneur and billionaire Mark Cuban explains this:
“Most people think it’s all about the idea. It's not. Everyone has ideas. The hard part is doing the homework to know if the idea could work in an industry, and then doing the preparation to be able to execute on the idea.”
I immersed myself into researching other small businesses and see what they were doing right.
Joel and I analyzed them to see what we would do differently... or even better.
Etsy, Walmart.com, Amazon, and countless other websites were our inspiration to see what jewelry companies were selling --and if there was room for one more in the mix that could turn a profit.

I am one of those people who love to share...
I can look at a business and brainstorm a ton of ideas for you to filter through and see what sounds appealing and doable.
So I will be sharing some tips for other business owners--especially those who are in the handmade business and want to see more of a profit.
If you’re considering which way to lean, I hope my tips may be helpful.
There is no one way to build a business. Everyone has their own style and level of stamina. And sometimes life gets in the way.
There is also no such thing as an overnight success. It takes time. I am grateful I had over twenty years of writing books to learning web design and SEO before Gutsy Goodness ever launched.
You have your own experience. It will be different than mine, but just as valuable.
I look forward to giving you an inside peak to starting a handmade business and perhaps you will join in and we can do this together! Because...
we are the gutsy ones and
we commit to sharing life's goodness
